What Is Oil Pulling? Should I Try It for My Dental Health?

Posted on 3/15/2024 by Weo Admin
Coconut oil and oil pullingAdults often seek ways to improve their dental health. Increasingly, researchers have tied dental health to the overall physical health of adults. One technique that has been touted to clean and whiten teeth is an ancient one called oil pulling. If you want to learn more about oil pulling, here is some information you can use to decide if oil pulling might be right for your dental health.

What Is It?

Oil pulling began about 5,000 years ago in India. During that time, Hindu scholars thought oil pulling would benefit the entire body by aligning all of the energies of the body. Many South Asians continue to use oil-pulling techniques to clean their mouths and keep their breath fresh.

To oil pull, choose a vegetable oil. Most adults choose coconut oil for oil-pulling techniques. You use about a tablespoon of oil and swish it around in your mouth for about 20 minutes. Then you rinse your mouth out. Many people follow oil-pulling techniques with their regular tooth brushing and flossing.

Should I Try Oil Pulling?

Like a lot of dental techniques, the jury is still out on the issue. Some research done by the American Dental Association indicates that oil pulling does reduce the overall number of bacteria in your mouth, which has several advantages. The bacteria in your mouth are responsible for both tooth decay and gum disease. Also, there is some evidence that suggests oil pulling may reduce inflammation in your mouth, which can reduce inflammation in other areas of your body as well. This is especially true if you have gum disease because research has shown that the inflammation from gum disease can travel to other areas of your body, such as your heart.

If you are unsure whether you are ready to try oil pulling or not, you may want to talk to one of our dentists. Many dentists study natural techniques as a helpful tool for their dental practice. Speaking with a dentist that you trust is a great way to get information about whether a technique such as oil pulling would be beneficial.
