All patients should make sure to come to our office for a professional dental cleaning and thorough examination. The American Dental Association recommends patients have two cleanings and examinations a year to make sure the patient maintains a high degree of oral cavity health. When they are performed with regularity there is no denying the positive impact that examinations and cleanings can have on the oral cavity. Patients should be made aware that having a high level of oral health directly impacts the level of medical health. When a patient’s oral health suffers then so does their medical health. Patients who have questions about cleanings or want to schedule a cleaning should come see our office at Ortega Dental.
Why Are Dental Cleanings Important?
Even when patients are diligent in their oral care and brush and floss with regularity, there is simply no way all of the bacteria, tartar, and plaque can be removed adequately. This builds up over time and can begin the start of the earliest stage of periodontal disease which can cause widespread decay and tooth loss. A professional dental cleaning entails using various tools to scrape off all bacteria, tartar, and plaque which has built up along the gum line and on the tooth’s surface. When this material is removed, it minimizes the chances of patients developing gum disease and tooth decay.
While our staff cleans your teeth, they will also take a close examination of every aspect of your mouth. They will look for soft tissue damage, sores on the tongue, ulcers, and abscesses on the gums. We will also perform an oral cancer screening as well. This is important because detecting oral cancer early greatly improves the success of cancer treatment.
What Happens During a Dental Cleaning?
A typical dental cleaning takes 30 to 60 minutes. They should be adopted as a regular component to any patient’s oral health regiment. We will perform examinations of the oral cavity to make note of any changes in the oral pathology of the patient and to update records regarding any pre-existing conditions we are monitoring.
We use scalers to scrape tartar and bacteria from the surface of the teeth both above and below the gum line. Once we have completed that, we will use a dental toothpaste to not only brush away plaque and debris but to also remove any stains or discolored patches on the teeth. This will brighten the look of your teeth. It should be noted that the American Dental Association does not recommend the daily use of abrasive toothpastes and suggest they only be used under the guidance of a dental professional.
We also provide fluoride treatment which is coated over the teeth to help maintain the strength of the tooth enamel. We also use x-rays to analyze the strength of the upper and lower jawbones. Our staff will evaluate the amount of bone mass available and determine if other treatments are warranted to address any conditions discovered.
